What is integrative mental health?

An integrative approach to mental wellness seeks to unite science-backed treatments used in mainstream psychology with other alternative & complementary treatments.  We don’t just consider the mind & brain health, but the whole of the person including their environment, past history, current lifestyle, as well as cultural or societal pressures.  We complete the circle of integration with education, teaching clients the skills to maintain balance & wellness in their life.

Can the classes and services you offer help me to lower my stress & feelings of anxiety?

Absolutely yes!  All of our classes as well as our holistic and therapy services can give you the tools to manage stress & anxiety with more ease.  Research has shown that including practices in your weekly routine that help to balance the nervous system and train awareness and attention in the mind can naturally lower the production of stress hormones in the body, which will naturally lower stress levels and reduce anxiousness.

Can mental wellness improve my personal and professional performance?

Yes!  Our personal & professional experience will reflect what we believe about ourselves. Subconscious and even conscious feelings of unworthiness, fear, or self-sabotage can get in our way of living to our fullest potential.  Therapy, holistic treatments, & meditation practice can help us to recognize these mental blocks and give us the tools to work through them gaining a mindset for success!

At what age would you recommend starting care for your mental health?

No one is too young or old to start caring for their mental wellness, and by starting these practices at a young age we can set ourselves up for success in the future.  We teach tools to better manage stress & anxiety, feelings that are often amplified as we age and take on more in life, so you can see how valuable this would be for young minds.  Science now knows that neuroplasticity, or our brain’s ability to change, happens well into adulthood, so we are never too old to start caring for our minds to create positive change.

What is the difference between psychology and counselling?

Psychology is offered by a professional with a master’s or doctoral degree and takes a more clinical approach to therapy with psychological testing and assessment, and the ability to treat more severe mental disorders such as PTSD, bipolar, severe anxiety & eating disorders to name a few.

Counselling is offered by a qualified professional with a diploma, undergraduate degree or master’s degree and adopts a more person-centered approach to mental wellness supporting things like grief, anger management, relationship issues, anxiety & phobias.

Can a mental wellness program help me transition off prescription medication?

At Balance Wellness we believe that there are absolutely times when medication is necessary, but we also believe that through caring for our mental health with the support of a wellness team and committing to self-care through practices such as meditation, proper nutrition and lifestyle choices, there is always potential to reduce or transition off medication.  We would be happy to work with you and your doctor in this process.

What is holistic wellness?

Holistic wellness is an approach to health that views all aspects of an individual’s life and their relationship with their environment.  Holistic treatments treat the WHOLE of the individual and were the prevalent way of healing the body, also known as traditional medicine before allopathic medicine came to be.  Modalities such as acupuncture, cranial-sacral therapy, reiki, etc., attend to the more subtle layers and tap into our bodies’ natural healing abilities.

What is reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese form of healing where the practitioner channels Universal energy and uses it to clear blocks in their client, very similar to acupuncture in Traditional Chinese Medicine.  This treatment is deeply relaxing, can relieve pain & anxiety, speed up healing, and reduce symptoms of illness and disease.

What is craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral therapy is a hands-on technique where the practitioner gently manipulates the synarthrodial joints at the base of the skull and increases the flow of cranial sacral fluid around the brain. This treatment has been shown to reduce stress, alleviate headaches and migraines, relieve neck and back pain, and more.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient treatment that has been used for centuries by Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners.  By placing very thin needles into specific acupuncture points around the body, acupuncture can restore the flow of energy of Qi in the body, restore the function of our organs and treat many different ailments such as digestive disorders, nausea, chronic pain, menstrual cramps, and more.

What is life coaching and how could it help me?

A life coach helps people to clarify their goals in life, identify obstacles and blind spots, and help create a strategy to more effectively move towards their goals and desired way of being and living.  A life coaching session is an amazing way to get clear on what it is you truly want and the path to get there!

How do I know what services would help me most?

If you are looking to reduce stress & anxiety and create more joy in your life our meditation classes are a perfect way to help you do that.  If you are experiencing major blocks in life, are dealing with depression, chronic anxiety, PTSD, or other health issues, one of our holistic or therapy services would be a better route to take.  You can also take our short quiz to discover which of our services would support you best in your wellness journey.

What is meditation?

Meditation is a practice that has been used by numerous cultures and traditions to train the mind to have increased focus, attention and awareness, and achieve mental clarity and stability and emotional intelligence.  Science has shown us that regular meditation practice actually changes the structure of our brain reducing gray matter in areas connected to stress and negative emotions, while increasing gray matter in areas of self-control, compassion, sustained attention & interoceptive perception.  See our meditation schedule for current classes and pass options.

How do I know what class is best for me?

On our classes page, we give a brief description of our different class styles and what they can help with, you find enough information to make an informed decision.  If you are still unsure, you can chat with one of our Wellness Advocates and they can answer any questions you have and direct you to the appropriate class.  Or take our short quiz to find out what class or service could support you the most.

What if I don't have time to meditate?

The great thing about meditation is that it does not take a lot of time. Meditating for even 5 minutes a day has shown to have great benefits.  You also don’t have to come into the studio for class, as we offer all our classes via live stream so that you can practice with us from home, your office or even in your car, (just not while driving please).  Our Video on Demand library has a variety of class lengths so for those days where you only have a few minutes you can choose a shorter practice.

What if I can’t sit on the floor to meditate?

There is a common image of people meditating sitting cross-legged on the floor with their fingers placed in a mudra.  This is a stereotypical impression of how you “should” meditate, but is not at all true.  You can meditate in a chair, while walking through nature, or even lying down on the floor.  In our Clarity Studio, we have a multitude of different props that can make your practice more comfortable, cushions, bolsters, and meditation chairs, and we also have a bench for those who cannot get down on the floor.

What is multi-sensory therapy?

Multi-sensory therapy is an amazing way to connect us to the present moment through our senses and is used in the treatment of dementia, Alzheimer’s, autism, brain injury, learning disabilities and other mental disorders.  Being immersed in what we see, feel, hear and smell allows agitation, distraction, worry and stress to dissolve, leaving us in a state of present moment bliss. Whether you are looking to enhance your meditation practice or support healing of a neurological or sensory processing disorder, our multi-sensory rooms are a great option!

What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the practice of using extracted oils from plants for therapeutic purposes. Science has shown that when we receive information through our sense of smell, not only does our olfactory nerve send that information to the area in our brain that identifies that scent but it also activates our amygdala (emotional center) and hippocampus (memory center). This can in turn trigger a recall of memory or make us feel different emotions.  We use aromatherapy in some of our holistic practices as well as in our multi-sensory therapy rooms where you can customize your practice by choosing a scent to inspire a particular feeling or emotion.  Learn more about aromatherapy & the current scents we have available here.

What is chromotherapy?

Chromotherapy is colour therapy.  Each colour on the spectrum of light emits a particular frequency or wavelength.  These frequencies create an effect on our own body’s frequency or electromagnetic signature.  Much like scent, different colors can trigger different emotions, or even inspire a desired feeling such as motivation, relaxation, or presence.  Learn more about chromotherapy here.

What is brainwave therapy?

Brainwave therapy is the use of sound that can influence your brain waves to move at the desired frequency.  For example, when we are stressed, our brainwaves are moving in High Beta, which is fast and incoherent.  By listening to brainwave therapy set to Alpha, we can very quickly entrain the brain to also shift into an Alpha state, inducing relaxation and a state of meditation.  This type of therapy is great to accompany a meditation practice, especially on those days where the mind is very busy, helping you to quiet and drop in with ease.
